CANON
History: wiki link, In-depth: The origins of the Arcanist, the Arcanist's life up to the destruction of the Pillar. After the destruction of the Pillar, the Arcanist works to amass his own elemental flight, much like the other deities.

Personality: (Note: Most of this is extrapolated from the small amount of canon the Arcanist has, as well as the in-character forum posts on Flight Rising I could find. The rest is headcanon.)

First and foremost, the Arcanist is a dragon of learning. He's extremely intelligent, and the pursuit of knowledge is the most important thing to him. He values it more than anything, and sometimes that can hurt his relationships with other beings. It's not that he doesn't care about them, or that he's cruel, but rather that he just cares a little bit more about knowing things. The way this manifests isn't through outright meanness or rudeness. He's very polite, and often pleasant to be around. Instead, it's more that he sort of forgets about others' feelings when making decisions if those feelings are not relevant to him gaining more knowledge. That can make others feel like they're not important to him, even when they are.

When consumed by the desire to know, the Arcanist becomes unable to see caution or the possible consequences of his actions. Upon noticing the strange darkness in space, he becomes obsessed with finding out what it is. He climbs the enormous Pillar for days, demonstrating just how far he's willing to go for the sake of discovery and knowledge. When he gets to the top, he ends up weakening the spell that had protected the world from the darkness – the Shade. He tries to communicate with the Shade, thinking that he's discovered something marvelous, but the Shade ends up destroying both the weakened protective spell and the Pillar. The Arcanist never considers that perhaps the darkness might not be a good thing, or that it should be left alone. Because of both his immense curiosity and his willingness to act on it, the world suffers and the balance that had existed is disrupted.

He often considers others as beings to teach. He's aware that he knows more than many (if not everyone), and because he's a dragon who cares about others' intellectual development, he wants to help them get as much knowledge as possible – since that's what's important in life, right? This can make him come off as arrogant, though it doesn't stem from a place of thinking he is better than others. He just really thinks that knowledge is something everyone should strive for, always, constantly, all the time. He doesn't notice that it can make him seem arrogant, though if someone told him, he would try to rein it in more...at least with the person who told him.

The Arcanist is not that great at being socially self-aware. It's hard for him to realize what he's saying or doing is weird or unwanted, especially since it almost always comes from a place of good intentions. That's why he doesn't realize he can seem arrogant when trying to teach others. He assumes that somehow others will be able to determine what his intentions are. He doesn't like to make people uncomfortable or upset, so whenever someone lets him know that he's being weird or annoying or upsetting, he gets very apologetic. He honestly just wants everyone to coexist and learn about existence together. He dislikes real conflict, as it often gets in the way of learning.

What he does not consider real conflict, though, is debate. He loves to debate, though others might see what he does as pointless arguing. The Arcanist thinks a situation where two minds pit their knowledge against each other is one of the highest forms of art. His love for debate would not be a problem, were it not for him taking those attitudes everywhere he goes. He points out the flaws in everyone's reasoning whenever he can, and he can be very pedantic about things. He's a stickler for things like proper grammar, spelling, and the scientific method. Things must be done and said properly, or they hold no value. This, too, does not come from a place of arrogance, but from the same place of wanting knowledge and intellectual advancement to be the most important things to everyone. He has a hard time coming to terms with the fact that they're not, and they won't be.

Despite his flaws and difficulties, the Arcanist is a pleasant enough dragon to interact with. He's not peppy, emotional, or super nice, but he's considerate. He definitely can be snarky and snippy, though not all the time if you're on his good side. He likes things to be organized, especially books and documents, when they need to be accessible to everyone. It's not unusual to walk into your workspace after he's been there and find that all of your documents have been meticulously organized. He wants everyone's research to go smoothly, and having to dig through a mess of documents isn't smooth for many. He helps others when he can, as it not only is a nice thing to do, but it also can advance his knowledge of the world both in the moment and in the future.

The way he handles the pursuit of knowledge in relationships themselves is a bit different than the way he handles the pursuit of knowledge elsewhere. It is more intuitive than his usual methods. The Arcanist doesn't necessarily want to study emotions through experiments and notes, but he wants to understand their intricacies fully through experiencing them and watching others experience them. It's a more natural approach to learning than the bookishness he usually displays.

In the end, the Arcanist is an obsessively curious and determined dragon with the search for knowledge of all things as his main motivator. He's considerate but pedantic, pleasant but weird and sometimes annoying. He's somewhat stubborn about his worldview regarding knowledge as the ultimate aspiration – he doesn't understand how others' priorities can be elsewhere. He's happy when asked to help others with matters of science and knowledge, and even happier when he's able to find someone with the same passion that he has. If he can be described in one word, it is scholar.

INTO THE HEDGE
Seeming: Servant
Role: Darkling Astronomer
Abilities: Extensive knowledge of any documents in the Library (or otherwise in the house) relating to stars, space, and constellations, particularly star maps and star charts. Can create 3-dimensional projections of what constellations or stars look like. He is extremely proficient at identifying qualities and traits of celestial bodies, especially when looking at them through a telescope.

Description: The Arcanist's colors have been darkened and somewhat muted, except for his still-bright pink eyes. He is able to blend into the shadows well because of this, as long as his wings are tucked in. That's because the undersides of his wings are speckled with what look to be glowing stars. He is smaller than he was before; he's still larger than most, and certainly longer, but not so much as to make it too difficult for him to move throughout the house.

Reasoning: The Arcanist's hunger for knowledge when he first awakens drives him to an abandoned observatory, somehow still standing after the destruction of civilization. There, he looks through the telescope and is absolutely stunned by the sight of the stars. Studying space becomes his passion; he lives and breathes it. Oblivious to the fighting of the Gladekeeper and the Plaguebringer in the world outside, he spends countless ages mapping and studying the heavens. Ultimately, it is also his passion for what lies in space that causes the Shade's reentry into his world and the destruction of the Pillar that had kept his world safe.

"The heavens are more wondrous tonight than they have been in countless years," the Arcanist says, his face stuck firmly in front of the observatory telescope. He's grown used to talking to himself over the centuries; there's nobody else to talk to. "Oh! The Balwou constellation, just over there – its light drowns out the stars around it as if it were the bottomless sea." He adjusts the telescope. "And the Gilgara nebula...she's more vibrant than ever before! Those purples and pinks! I must document this truly incredible sight."

The dragon pulls away from the telescope with some reluctance and turns toward the mountainous piles of paper covering the floor. He looks around, as if searching for something. "Now, where did I deposit those blank sheets of paper?" He flips through several piles and finds nothing. Then, a realization popping into his mind, he moves towards a table holding a quill, ink, and even more piles of paper. Blank paper. Of course he had left them there – where else?

With paper, quill and ink in his hands, he moves back toward the telescope. The items go on the floor in front of him for easy writing access. He looks into the telescope, prepared to gaze again upon the colorful visage of his new favorite nebula.

It's there, but there's something wrong. Part of it is blotched out by...a strange darkness. What is it? What is this darkness? Was it there before? He hasn't seen it prior to this, or so he thinks. He would surely recognize it if he had, right? He hasn't forgotten anything important, has he? No, of course not...right?

Wracked by curiosity, the Arcanist tears himself from the telescope again to find information on this darkness. He searches through page after page, pile after pile. Much time passes, and he finds himself setting down the final page in the room. He's found nothing.

There's a feeling about the situation that he recognizes: it's the same feeling he got when he first saw the stars. An immense desire to know. There's something facing him that he doesn't know, and it fascinates him. It consumes him. He has to know. What is it? Why is it there? Why now? What does it all mean? There are so many questions, and so few answers...right now, that is.

A grin of excitement on his face, he sits in front of the telescope again. This knowledge won't escape him. He'll find out what this darkness is, and he'll do whatever it takes to do it.
